Real Maths Challenge - 2012/13 Academic Year
The Real Maths Challenge is a series of mathematical problems / investigations covering place value, shape, data, measures and probability. This year there will be 6 challenges spread over the year where children from the same year group can compete against children from other schools. Children work together in class to find answers to the challenges and submit their best entry. We will provide a blog for all schools to communicate, collaborate and share their experiences. Schools will be divided into several leagues and the top school in each league will be invited to a face to face challenge in Summer 2013.
The 'Real Maths Challenge' is designed and managed by consultants Mark Hattersley and Philipa Varley from the Learning & Curriculum Delivery Team in partnership with the Innovation Centres.

Spring Real Maths Challenge

The real maths challenge is a series of mathematical problems / investigations that are linked to the maths curriculum in Y5 and Y6. The challenge will be set up in a series of leagues where children from the same year group can compete against children from other schools. The 'Real Maths Challenges' will be made available online every 2 weeks throughout the Spring term to all competitors, the school then has this time to allow their children (individually or in groups) to calculate their answers and submit their best entry. Activities will involve utilising simple free online resources and an iPod (provided freely to each school for the length of the competition) to record evidence (photographic, audio and video). We will provide a blog for all schools to communicate, collaborate and share their experiences. Schools will be divided into several leagues and the top schools in their leagues will be invited to a send a team of 4 children to a Face to Face (F2F) finals afternoon to compete against each other to win an iPad 2.
The 'Real Maths Challenge' is designed and managed by consultants Mark Hattersley and Philipa Varley from the Learning & Curriculum Delivery Team in partnership with the Innovation Centres.
The initial introduction of this project was succesfully delivered on Thursday 5th January. The presentation can be found here (no embedded video)
